Sudden Unexpected Infant Death

What are the causes of SUID? There are many reasons why some infants suddenly and unexpectedly die. Some are related to undetected health conditions, including metabolic disorders, infections, and cardiac problems. Other babies are neglected to the point of death and murdered. Still others accidentally drown during bath time or suffer sleep accidents in which they are inadvertently trapped in their bedding or suffocated by an adult. Disturbingly, there are some cases in which a definitive cause of death is never determined. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS, is one of these unexplainable causes of infant mortality.

What is SIDS? According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, SIDS is the sudden death of an infant under 1 year of age that remains unexplained after thorough case investigation that includes a complete autopsy, examination of the death scene, and a review of the clinical history of the child and family.
