Sudden Unexpected Infant Death
What causes SIDS? There is no single factor or condition that can be pointed to as the cause of SIDS. Rather, it is suspected that a combination of factors cause SIDS deaths. First, vulnerable babies are within the critical developmental stage of between 1 and 6 months of age. Next, it is theorized that these babies have some sort of subtle defect in the brainstem that controls blood pressure, temperature, pulse and respiratory rates.. External stressors, such as prone sleeping position, nicotine exposure or excessive bedding, also seems to play a role. These three factors combine into what is referred to as the Triple Risk Model.
