5. Inadequate Supervision is characterized by the following situations:
- Lack of appropriate supervision: Leaving young children alone with no adult supervision provided. Individual factors to be considered in these cases include the maturity level of the child, duration and frequency of unsupervised time, the environment in which the child is being left, and accessibility of other adults
- Exposure to hazards: Exposing children to hazardous situations, substances, and environments is considered neglect. Some of these conditions and substances include: Poisons, Small objects Drug paraphernalia, Second-hand smoke, Gun and other weapons, Rotten food, Feces Insect infestations, Lack of water, Lead paint, No use of car seats
- Inappropriate caregivers: Leaving a child with someone who is unable to adequately care for her or who should not be trusted with her is considered neglect. Inappropriate caregivers would include other children, child molesters, drug users, etc…
